Backstory: Ed's story really starts at twelve years old, when he was forced into enlisting in the Air Force. His own father was proud to serve on an airship as an engineer, having neither the ambition or the magical capabilities to rise into a position of rank. He loved what he did and visited his wife and son whenever he was able, though, sending them his pay so they could survive while he was away. From the age of six until he enlisted Ed spent most of his time on the streets, running with the children who lived there. He learned a lot about picking pockets, breaking and entering, running cons and gambling. He got into trouble regulalry with the local guards which caused his mother no end of despair. After one particularly troublesome incident involving a minor noble and a petticoat, timed incorrectly so that Ed's father was in town at the time, saw Ed being dragged to a recruiter. From there, the rest become history.
The standard contract when signing up was four years, long enough to straighten out the youngster and put him back on track. After testing, which discovered he had some potential with fire magic, he was snatched up by the air force and sent to an academy to develop him. Ed spent the next four years ignoring classes, clambering over airships to learn about their inner workings and pretty much just goofing off the real work and lessons to set up gambling rings and run contraband to sell to the others recruits. He never lived up to his magical potential because he spent so little time in class, but he did develop the skills he relies on now. On his sixteenth birthday, having served his four years, he walked out of that life. Unfortunately he hadn't read the fine print, stating his four years were to start after his education was complete. Oh well!
Free at last, with very few skills that could be put to much use and a small bounty on his head for desertion, Ed had little in the way of prospects. He found himself falling in with a mercenary company, in particular an aerial corps. There was where he met the eccentric Captain Stone, a strategic genius who was tolerated by the other captains because of her record, despite the amount she drank. She saw something in Ed, taking him under her wing. Until he was 21 he spent his time working in all positions aboard the Zephyr. There was plenty of action, adventure. He really grew, becoming more confident but also began drinking a lot. Captain Stone became his role model.
Soon after Ed turned 21 Captain Stone decided it was time for her to part company with the mercenary company. Taking along all the crew who were willing, she fled with a large sum from the company's purse. After that they took to a life of piracy in the skies. By then Ed was treasurer aboard the ship, though Stone treated him like her second in command. He was the only one willing to drink with her every night, after all!
Then one day Stone disappeared. There was a small debate about who should take over her position, ending with a serious amount of bribery and unlikely promises from Ed who was then elected. That was during Ed's 25th year. After that the fate of the Zephyr slowly went downhill. Ed's crazy schemes, drinking and lechery drove the crew mad, leading them to mutiny. On one particularly crazy night in Adeluna the crew abandoned Ed, leaving him behind with nothing but a note.
Relations: While Ed doesn't have family members, he does have a slowly growing crew.

Backstory: Peabody was the son of a butler, growing up in the servants quarters of the manor of a prestigious noble family. He always watched as the upper class children laughed and played, learned their lessons and had everything given to them. He also saw the lower class children outside of the manor enjoying their lives, perhaps laughing and playing even harder than those who were better off. Peabody, however, was raised to replace his father. Some bad decisions on their Noble employer's part, however, saw disaster strike. Peabody's father was struck down in a raid on the home and Peabody found himself on the streets at the age of 10.
Wandering the streets he stumbled across a recruiter signing people up. Traumatized, but realising that a life on the streets might end up being fatal for him, a young Peabody signed up then and there, lying about his age so he could.
With no home to return to and a lot of repressed anger at what had happened to his life, Peabody channeled this to help him over the following years. He started out on a small ship and worked his way up, transferring as word of his heroic deeds and exploits reached the ears of those higher up. In his thirty year naval career he spent time learning many different skills, from basic ship work, to battlefield medicine, even some special operations for some years as a marine. He was well respected, even by the officers who were born into noble families and had their commissions bought for them. Peabody, his record impeccable and undeniable was eventually promoted. From there he won the respect of his peers time and again, throwing himself into danger and coming out the other side. He was offered ships of his own on numerous occasions, turning them down each time. Despite everything, he remembered how his father had served that noble faithfully.
After thirty years he felt his time was up, wishing to retire to a life of peace and relaxation. Two years in and he realised he had made a huge mistake, feeling the call to action and adventure every day. A fateful encounter saw him meeting Ed Ward, and there a bond was formed. He signed on with Ed as his manservant, still happy to be behind the man in power, guiding and aiding as needed.
