As the latest carriage of travelers arrived in the city, a particularly small tourist stepped down and onto the sandstone below.  Standing barely 3 feet in height, the halfling woman squinted her eyes in the bright sun as she looked where to go for her next destination, the large tome of hers under her arm.  She had heard of Sularia's rose gardens but refused to believe their growth was anything short of magical.  After all, it was a desert- how could roses grow there?  Not one to be wrong about anything ever, the woman headed off into the marketplace to get information.

What she found instead were large crowds (in both senses of the world for someone her size) that eventually got the best of her.

"Blasted people….out of my way, imbeciles!" She yelled, flailing through the crowd until finally reaching an opening that let her catch her breath.  The people didn't even notice her, causing her shake in frustration.  She looked around, confused at her location.

"Now where am I….oh, gods dammit, was I turned around?!"  She said to herself, completely lost.

Aelwen was on a mission, or so she thought. She could spend every waking moment with Christian by her side but she couldn’t spend her whole life just being some house wife. Not that her and Christian were even talking marriage but they had agreed to be attached to the hip. The last time they had gotten separated the world had fallen apart.

Now Aellie was a particularly small woman, a grand four feet eleven inches. In a cloak she looked like a child but outside of it she was gorgeous. With long strawberry blonde curls she managed to make looking small and curvy something of an art piece. However, it was her hair-trigger temper that made her who she was. Her silver eyes watched the crowds and before long she was making her way through the women filled streets. One man to every ten females. Even Aelwen who had over hundred siblings only had six brothers.

It was Arri so she didn’t carry her unusual weapon with her. Instead her fists were balled up as she made her way through the crowds. Her vibrant purple and black dress stood out the most. It was heavy pulled by ribbons up the bodice in a corset fashion. If she couldn’t be tall at least her bust would stick out. If anything she did have her mother’s curves.

Her eyes set on a person smaller than she was and it made her smile she was hardly the type of person to ever find someone as short as her. Aelwen was a half-elf but she was so short in stature it didn’t appear like that. Tugging her witch hat in the proper direction she made her way over to the rather unusual being. “You know yelling like that in Arri is bound to get yourself killed. Magic or not.” She waved her hand to the book. “The bazaar was the last place you should have gone if you didn’t want to get lost.”

People walked around Aellie like the plague but that was only because of her temper. “I can show you around. There is no place like Arri.”

The halfling looked up to Aellie, unsurprised.  Obviously she was used to having to look up to taller individuals.  Unfortuneately for Aellie, based on her regal attire she was also used to assuming others were beneath her.

"Ah, a tour guide, I was wondering where you were."  She said as she adjusted her glasses and turned to give the pink-haired woman her attention.  "You will take me to the rose gardens.  Lead the way."

Aellie rolled her eyes. “I’m not usually a tour guide. I’m offering it from the goodness of my heart. Mother would be quite displeased with me if I didn’t show our city or our district to people.” Aellie stretched a bit and beckoned the woman to follow her from the crowd.

Though the half-elf did stop and looked back at her. There was an annoyed look on her face. “You came to Arri with just one of the rose gardens in mind? You might have to pick and choose. There are six and that doesn’t include the college, the cemetery, the castle courtyard, nor the night gardens which are inside.”

She crossed her arms a bit and thought on it. “We can start with my mother’s. Her district is closest anyways. I don’t feel like getting lit on fire yet, not being hugged today, don’t have time for silent treatment, and Black Court is creepy.” That was just how she felt about it as she huffed and puffed her way up the street. Looking back at the halfling. “Names Aelwen, daughter of Queen Angela. I’m used to escorting people just not in Arri.”

"Pick and choose?  Nonsense, I will see them all until my questions are answered.  But I suppose we shall begin with whichever one you believe is a good place to start, so to your mothers' then."

She sighed and followed behind Aellie.  Despite the size difference she was surprisingly quick, able to keep up with the larger woman with no trouble.

"You will refer to me as Quis Electrum, or Miss Electrum.  Whichever is easier.  How unusual it is to see royalty outside the castle.  Or is that normal behavior for this city?"

“Well, it’s going to be a long day. Let’s just hope I don’t get mauled by my aunts… or cousin for that matter.” She mused a bit more. “It’s normal in Arri. All of us do our part. My mother is a lot more than a queen here. She is Arri’s Matron Daughter. Revaliir’s Voice chose her to be a God some time ago. I would offer to take you to her realm but due to circumstances with another Goddess at this time… I can’t do that. If you think Arri’s gardens are wonderful you would die at my mother’s temple.” There was no lie in Aelwen’s eyes as they made their way into the red court district.

Flowers were in bloom everywhere. There were several types that shouldn’t have been allowed in the desert air. “Arri’s unusual magic structure has allowed several botanists to be able to grow plants here that shouldn’t. My mother is the Goddess of Life and Earth, so the magic in this area of the city is already ten times what it is supposed to be.” Her boots clicked against the silver and gold bricks of Arri’s roads.

They came up to quite the large manor. It was decorated in fine shades of deep greens and golds. Flowers hung in ivy-like vines from many of the windows. “The garden is out back. Most of the queens have public gardens like these at their homes to show off their gardens. Even my Aunt Toya who… well, you’ll meet her. Even she has a garden she takes care of. The Red Court specializes in red roses.”

Aelwen didn’t even knock as she burst into the door. “Aelwen!” a voice yelled at the door shook the wall. “You can’t treat the manor like that.” Aelwen lifted her hand up and gently cleaned out her ear with her pinky.

A rather tall girl with white hair was before them now. “Always the one for rules. I’m going to the garden. This is Quis Electrum, I’m showing her around. Quis Electrum this is my sister Nerezza.” The white-haired girl had golden eyes that peered down at.

“Don’t slam the doors on the house. You will make people more upset than they already are over this whole thing.” Nerezza left them and Aelwen made a face.

“It’s gotten that bad? Nez, what’s going on with Mother?” Aelwen didn’t want to keep up with the gossip but if Nez was this caught up in it she knew it had to be bad.

“Talk is Mom isn’t going to make it much longer.” Well… that was a bombshell dropped if there ever was one. Aelwen stood there in silence.

“Bullshit the woman has been through worse. Liar.” There was the tough act again and Nerezza shook her head and walked off. “Mom can’t just die. There’s hundreds of our little asses who still need her.” She mumbled as she took the woman through the heavily decorated house. It was clear that Angela was a woman of fine tastes. “Mom likes to decorate. If you could see her temple… Well, it is really pretty.”

It took them going out back of the house for the rose garden to really open up. The pathway instead of look pebbles looked more like rounded gems of many different kinds. Sapphires, rubies, and emeralds all in the shapes of pebbles lined the garden. Beautifully trimmed red roses bushes lined everything. Willow trees were a prominent feature in Angela’s garden as well. Not to mention the fountain in the distant center. It was the same one that was in the bazaar.

“This is it. There is a lot of it… if you want to just look at the roses we don’t have to go far.”

Quis was about to speak about her own experience with royalty before one of Aelwen's many sisters delivered the news.  She remained quiet, intently listening to the conversation before letting Nerezza walk away.

"Hm…forgive me, but may I ask what is your mother's condition?"

Aelwen stopped short of the gardens and swung around looking at the halfling. There was an angry look on her face. “Mother is at a war with another Goddess. Her condition? Not giving up when she should have and go into hiding. THAT, however, isn’t my mother’s style. She would rather defend and not fight back and hope that things get better. Imagine all of your magic getting used up, all of it. The only thing keeping you alive is some half baked divinity you have. That’s my mother’s condition. Not even the greatest healers in the world could save her.”

Taking a deep sigh. "My mother is one of three higher divinities. She doesn't have more power but… she looks out for the conclave. My mother's title is The Mother for a reason." It was clear that Aelwen was a strong individual who was trying to stand still in the wake of her mother's impending death. She had to be the strong one for her siblings. She would not let herself cry even if she really wanted to.

Quis remained unphased as Aelwen yelled at her.  It wasn't the first time someone snapped at her for asking questions, and it'll never be the last time.

"I see.  Well, to be a goddess in of itself is impressive enough.  I dream of such power and knowledge.  And to not fight back, I'm certain she has her reasons for being defensive rather than offensive.  Sometimes it just better to not attack.  As a goddess I know she has her reasons for what she did and had the best intentions for you."

Rather than attempt to approach to confort Aelwen, however, Quis backed away and placed her hand up.

"However, I know you care not what I have to say.  After all, I'm not only a tourist but a halfling at that.  My word is as valuable as the dead sands that your beautiful city keep at bay.   Had I known you were preoccupied I would not of requested your assistance.  I thank  you for your guidance thus far but it would be rude of me to keep you from more important matters."

Aelwen took a rather long sigh and shook her head. “No, there’s nothing I can do. Mother doesn’t want any of us to go into her realm right now. As far as I know she has locked all of us out. She is doing what she has to. Me? I’m going to do what she told me to and keep up with Arri. Someone has to.”

She offered a small smile. “I only snapped because the situation sucks. My father was lost to something called The Void. I hate that I’m losing my mother too. Immortals aren’t supposed to be able to die like this.” She beckoned Quis to follow her. “She would like you to enjoy her gardens. It’s the one thing she was always so proud of.”
