While usually the salty scent of the ocean brought forth happy memories of home, it was never the case here.  So violent it was, such disarray, that he could never find himself comfortable no matter how many times he frequented.  Yet the pirate haven had kept itself going for quite some time now.  Everyone had expected it to go to shambles so long ago and here it was today: full of discord yes, but thriving on its own.  Maybe there was something to that chaos, after all: humans were known for their chaotic nature, as were other species and races.  Maybe the fact that they were no longer lying to themselves about their urges had helped them succeed.  No apology, no reluctance, there was something to be said about that level of honesty.  Still though, there were enough disadvantages to outweigh the good, and he’d be happy when they were able to leave.

He didn’t exactly like the idea of bringing Nemu to this place, and in the past had been able to leave him with a dear friend or his older sister, but over time he’d gotten more confident in keeping him nearby.  More confident in himself in being able to keep him safe.  Besides, this would be a quick trip: no more than a day and a night if they were lucky.  It was mere hours before dawn when they had checked into the inn, a grimey key their only source of solitude while they were here, but the room was a decent enough size for the price…even if it was obviously inflated.  This was a pirate haven after all: they’d get their gold in any way they could and he wasn’t surprised by the greed.  Besides, he had enough to spare and paid happily.

When he was strapping the last of his weapons onto himself, Torinasu always from his hip, he looked to Nemu and spoke gently but quickly, “Remember, no opening doors or windows.  It shouldn’t take very long this time.” Invisible wards warmed themselves on his arms, his chest, legs, every inch of his skin to aid in repelling any blood sucker that dared get too close.  He moved over to him, eyes gentle as he reached a hand out and let his fingers move through the soft lilac strands, “Maybe sleep while you can.”

This city was teeming with life, people of all kinds going in and out of the shambled buildings, colors abound and the smell of cooking food wafted rampant throughout the air. And it wasn’t even daybreak. It was absolutely fascinating. Fortunately for Nemu, Naota had the foresight to gift him with a heavy robe that all but masked his glow as they traveled, lest any unscrupulous peoples take more than a passing interest in the value of a living star who was growing brighter from sheer excitement with every step they walked further into this curious place.

Naota had a job to do here. He hunted - vampires, of all things. It was a dangerous thing he did, and no place for Nemu to just be in the way. He worried, though. Naota, he was strong, capable and good at this job, but… still. As soon as they walked into the rented room, he pulled off the thick cloak and plopped himself on the bed. He looked to the man, beaming a smile as he watched him get ready, waiting for instructions. It was fun, watching him move.

No windows, no doors… He nodded. Nemu glanced a look at the single window in the room, covered by a shabby cloth and shifting slightly from the faint breeze off the ocean. Off limits, he repeated in his mind. Naota made his way closer, the fingers in Nemu’s hair felt nice and he leaned in to the touch, humming softly Sleep… He laughed, ”I will try!” Sleeping wasn’t going to happen, he was too excited, but he could still try. Nemu paused, briefly, before reaching to lay his hand on top of Naota’s, looking up towards his friend ”You… have good luck, okay?”

His eyes softened as he nodded, his fingers gently moving through his hair before pulling back, always careful not to pull at any of the strands.  “You have no need to worry about me.”   With that he moved from him, going to the door and opening it to leave before pausing and looking back at him, “Remember Nemu, don’t open the windows…”

Normally he wasn’t so pressing with this type of thing, but the pirate haven wasn’t known for its hospitality.  He couldn’t stay with him here for much longer though, and moved out of the room, being sure to close the door securely behind him before going down the hall.

This would be a routine enough job and so simple that he was surprised someone of his price and caliber had been hired for it in the first place.  They could have easily gotten someone for a going rate that wouldn’t leave their coin purse as light.  Ah well.  With any of that luck that Nemu had been wishing him, he’d be back before the sun had completed its climb.

He pulled the parchment from his belt strap and looked over the notes he’d scribbled next to the bounty and none of it seemed to add up.  This man was a problem for sure, even without being a vampire, but it hardly seemed like he was worthy of a true hunt and destruction.  Not that he particularly cared whether the bloodsucker lived or died, but it was almost a waste of time to do so in the first place.  By the time he had made it to his domain he’d already made sure to be fully charged, his fingers already curling from the ripe amount of energy ready to be unleashed.

If only it had gone the way he’d wanted.

An hour later he was back at their inn, quickly bursting into the room covered from head to toe in blood, his eyes glowing brightly with a red hue to match the splatters on his skin, clothing, and in his hair.  His chest was rising and falling heavily as he pressed his back against the door and his blade hadn’t even been pulled from its sheath.  He quickly locked his eyes on Nemu, his own expression one of surprise and near panic, “U-Up up!  Time to go!”

His hand rose up, lifting their things up and repacking anything that had been moved out until the two backpacks were next to him against the door.  There was no time to explain right now but he’d be able to as soon as they were out and gone.  If fate was with them they’d at least have a few minutes for that…and if the inn keep kept his lips sealed of who was dwelling in his lodgings that morning.  The sky was a deep blue from the sun making its rise but he knew that wouldn’t stop his pursuers, not with the -oddly- justified anger that would be fueling them.

The window. The window. The little star had sat perfectly still, watching his friend move away until the door finally clicked behind him. He hummed softly to himself and after a moment turned to look at the window. Behind such a thin cloth was the splendor of an eclectic, hand-built city to the likes of which he’d never experienced. What would it look like once the light hits it? He gripped his fingers together nervously.

Curiosity was… a problem. He’d always been a curious creature, even before he came to Revaliir - idle ponderings about his far-away neighbors is largely what occupied his mind for that uncountable length of time. But ten years out in the open land traveling with Naota - the curiosity had become an addiction. A compulsion, a desperate urge that quickly grew to madness the more it was denied. And, the more he experienced in this world by falling victim to this vice, the more insatiable it grew. Being told to not look out the window, now he couldn’t think of anything else.

He had tried to sleep. Really. Following Naota’s suggestion, he had curled himself under the blankets, throwing a pillow over his head to drown out the room and the world around him. But sleep never came. Unseen, the quiet little window loomed in the background, his curious-adled mind was soon screaming at him to investigate. Just a peek, his thoughts taunted, just a peek, nobody will know, nobody will see. Fingers were twisting in the fabric of his tunic as he stood mere inches from the faintly fluttering curtains. He had started to hum again, glow burning bright from the intensity of his nerves - from knowing he shouldn’t do this, but being unable to stop himself. A shaky hand slowly reached out, hooking a finger around the split in the curtains and he started to pull.

The door burst open and Nemu spun around, wide eyed and surprised as he inhaling a shriek so loud and in-human in sound it could silence a harpy. The subsequent outpour of frantic apology and explanation was cut short by a sudden and intense palpitation of his heart. Naota, he was covered in blood. It was everywhere, his eyes were red and panicked and wrong. They were leaving - now. Something was wrong, something has happened. Naota!

Nemu was blind to the possessions flying about the room as he ran, stumbling, towards the man. ”What- what happened? He hummed, worried hands brushing through the splotches of blood about his body and face. Why is there so much? ”Is this… yours?”
